Notes From the Popemobile

The best moment of yesterday's White House B-16 Pope Par-tay, other than hearing "Chair of St. Peter" in a Texas accent, was watching B-16 and the President shake hands, and hearing the President lean in to say: "We're going to sit down for one more song." Harsh!

Dude's 81, and he'd already sat through Public Domain on Parade: "The Star-Spangled Banner," "Yankee Doodle," "The Our Father," and the National Anthem of the Holy See, which goes on longer than some pontificates do and is rarely, I imagine, heard at the Olympics, unless the Vatican has a beach volleyball or luge team nobody's told me about.

PAPAL SHOE UPDATE: Still fabulous.

I've been getting asked a lot about the shoes. They're actually an ancient tradition within the Church, connecting the pontiff with the emperors of Rome. They are red because it is the color of martyrdom, and St. Peter, the first Pope, did not exactly shuffle off in his sleep. Also there was a post-season BOGO sale at Payless. These are the Pope's play-outside walking shoes. They mean he's ready to party BBQ style.

Here's the Cake of National Security, BTW. I'm so disappointed.

Because every German Pope wants pretty yellow bows on his cake...

Totally. Those bows needed to be WAY angrier.

Yeah...that's definitely NOT a birthday cake. Where's the chocolate frosting?

PS--LOVE that you have a tag called "tales from the BINGO hall." I used to work church BINGO night, and do we ever have a lot of stories to tell!

That is a seriously boring cake. They couldn't have called Chef Duff from Ace of Cakes to knock out that ginormous Pope hat you suggested?

I also feel like there's a Vatican luge-Cool Runnings joke waiting to be told somewhere...

THAT is the cake??? I mean, DC is like right next door to Ace of Cakes or Charm City Cakes and they couldn't come up with some Vatican replica cake? or a Sermon on the Mount cake? Loaves and Fishes cake or something???? Very disappointing.
The Pope is definitely not marrying GWB. Why does he have a wedding cake?

I was disappointed in the cake too. It looks like the "man in the dress" should at least have one of those toppers with the bride dragging the groom.

It is a shame FoodTV didn't go a Cake Challenge: Design the Pope's birthday cake. I can imagine what would come out of that. The prize: You get cool red shoes, just like the Popes.

That's a really fugly cake!

Whoever baked it, deserves to be excommunicated :-)

For a wedding, the cake rocks.

I'd heard there was supposed to be a replica of St. Peter's Square and all the trappings in Rome for the big celebration.

I second that Duff and the crew at Charm City Cakes should have been given this honor. That would have rocked. I'm totally going to have them do the cake for my husband's 40th birthday, if I can decide what major organ I want to donate to pay them to deliver to Milwaukee.
